Designed a personalized health tracker and community platform enabling dialysis patients to improve adherence, engagement, and outcomes while increasing care value for insurers.
From January to March 2017 in Berlin, I designed Leuchtturm, combining digital support with peer connection to help chronic dialysis patients live healthier lives and optimize care value for insurers.
Challenge
Chronic dialysis patients often struggle with adherence, isolation, and managing complex daily health tracking. The challenge was designing a highly engaging digital tool that improved patient quality of life and health outcomes by combining personalized tracking with community support, all while maximizing insurer value.
Divergence
Working with a Research Lead and Product Manager, the initial concept underwent multiple pivots. Research indicated that combining personalized data tracking with a peer support community was critical for long-term adherence and engagement. The necessity for quick design changes was driven by the concept not being finalized until two weeks before the presentation.
Ideation
The process was defined by lightning-fast design and testing due to the last-minute concept finalization. I provided all UI/UX design, using Sketch for high-fidelity screens and Principle for animations. My primary role was producing quick iterations based on user feedback and constantly revising screens to align with the many rapid concept pivots.
Convergence
I built the final prototype in Invision, integrating animated elements via Photoshop GIFs to demonstrate the product's dynamism and engagement features. Testing validated that the combination of personalized tracking data and the community feed was both intuitive and motivating for the dialysis patients.
Solution
The final solution was a comprehensive digital health service combining a personalized Health Tracker (allowing patients to monitor key vitals and activities) with a secure Community Forum (for peer-to-peer support), designed to drive healthier habits and better patient outcomes.
Outcome
Despite being completed simultaneously with another major project (Daheim) and facing an extremely tight deadline, the project successfully delivered a fully realized, highly dynamic prototype. The presentation showcased a clear path for insurers to optimize care value through enhanced patient self-management and community engagement.
Takeaways
This project was the ultimate test of speed and adaptability. The key takeaway was the ability to deliver high-quality design, complex animation integration, and validated screens under extreme time pressure and constant concept flux, proving the ability to pivot rapidly with product strategy.
